Few days ago, I have heard a song on a radio by Katie Melua so I have decided to write a review of one of her albums. I was a big fan of Katie Meulua and I totally forgot she existed. Probably she also forgot she existed. Katevan Katie Melua was born in 1984 in Georgia and substequently moved to UK where the songwriter Mike Batt spotted her in his search for a singer who can do blues and jazz in an innovative manner. Unfortunately, Norah Jones appeared before her and she took Katie’s spotlight. Still, Katie managed to accomplish some triumphs in her career.
As a 19 year old, Katie Melua released her first album Call Off the Search. In 2005, she dropped Piece by Piece. My favorite was her third album Pictures. It was the last album she did with her music father Mike Batt. They had a very successful collaboration as her first two efforts have sold over seven million records.
Melua decided it’s time for a milestone in her career. On her third full-length album, Katie sounded more mature. She was aware she overgrown her father. All of the songs sound more interesting and less hackneyed than those wrote by Batt. The album evokes old hollywood glamour, horror and western movies. Innocent, melancholic interpretations intertwined with atmospheric capture of the moment made a great folk-pop-blues album. Don’t get me started on that silky vocal. Everything she sings about comes from the real world. On Pictures, you get the feeling like she has lived every single line she sings. Those songs are not just songs. They are repeteadly experienced emotions.
Give Pictures a try. Do not let Katie Melua become forgotten.
