Scout Gillett is an artist on the rise for this year. Her groundbreaking new single "one to ten" has been making the rounds and captivating all in its path. With hypnotic vocals and a surreal vibe you will not soon forget, Scout Gillett is the songstress you've been waiting for your entire life. Hailing from Kansas City, MO, Scout is influenced equally by Bonnie Raitt and Karen O. She packed up her mom's Kia Rio and moved to Brooklyn in 2017, forming wo bands, frequenting the local venues, and touring the U.S. in a shortbus. Now making music on her own terms, Scout stops by Kurrent for an exclusive interview you can dive into below.     What is the inspiration behind your new single, "one to ten"? The inspiration behind my single one to ten is acknowledging different habits and behaviors but understanding that those things don’t define you. “There’s a light a the end of the tunnel”   What made you discover your passion for creating an eclectic blend of your own sound? What places in your mind do you channel to craft your songs? What made me discover my passion for creating my own sound, Happened by me fining my own voice and exercising that. Also seeing other artists I love and how their sound evolved and settled over time. I channel a very deep and meditative state when I craft songs.    What is the meaning behind the song's title and what significance does it hold for you?   The meaning is referring to how as humans we sometimes can be indulgent. Even when it comes to Fritos chips.. I can try to have one .. but it’s most likely gonna be ten. What are your favorite venues to perform at? and if you had to choose, do you feel more comfortable in the studio or onstage, and why?I love performing diy. I love dirty old bars. Some of my favorite venues I’ve played at would be fleetwoods in Asheville or the observatory in Chicago. I feel more comfortable on stage then in the studio because I pull a lot of emotion from the crowd and it feels like an exchange. I’ve become more comfortable an fascinated with recording .. your songs can evolve a lot there   How do you create your songs? What is the process like? Does it take you days, weeks, even longer? How does the perfect piece come together?I wish there was a straight answer. Some songs I’ve written in 15 min. Some it takes a year. Generally a few months though. I play my guitar and record a voice memo.. sing how I’m feeling and I’ll record a voice memo. I’ll take what I like from that memo and play around with what needs work. I don’t know how the perfect piece comes together... I’ll get back to you once I’ve made it ;) How did you create a sound throughout time that is so uniquely your own? What defines your sound to you?I think to stay unique and true- your influences have to be unique and true. You have to be unique and true and also understand what it is that you’re trying to get across. I listen to a lot of genres and try to be very thoughtful to what I listen to. I have an idea of how I want it to sound but I am also open to exploring new sounds to make my sound more unique. I’m not trying to go for what sales or what makes a hit. I write from a very genuine place. What do you hope you accomplish musically as we head further into 2020?   I got a home recording studio set up and I’m just going to record and write as much as possible. The original plan was to tour most of the year .. so I’m just expanding my musicianship and skills in a new way.
