Honest confession: I've listened to this at least 50 times this whole week and it's currently playing on repeat as I type this review.
Beth Ditto's (aka Mary Beth Patterson) song of the co-dependence between two parties in love; in a "I'll scratch your back, you scratch mine" way as they flow, well, in and out of love, where Beth try affirm with certainty whether her lover feels the same:
I, I do it for you
You do it for me
And we go
In and out of love
I, I do it for you
You do it for me
And we go
In and out of love
Genius
Beth Ditto is an Arkansas-born singer-songwriter, best known for her work with the indie band Gossip (previously The Gossip). She released her first EP, titled EP in 2011 and her first full album, Fake Sugar, came out this year, to mostly mixed, positive reviews:
"The debut solo album from Beth Ditto finds the former Gossip singer reconnecting with her southern roots. Despite some thin lyrics and odd production choices, it has a few excellent moments."
Pitchfork
"During the '00s, when she fronted post-riot grrrl rockers the Gossip, Arkansas-bred singer Beth Ditto could be one of the most explosive vocalists around, a tumultuously raw belter and an overpowering stage presence."
Rolling Stone
"“In and Out” pits a mighty verse about being fine with compromising in long-term relationships against a softer chorus where Ditto tries to affirm whether her partner feels the same: “I, I do it for you/You, you do it for me/And we go in and out of love,” she sings anxiously," writes Laura Snapes of Pitchfork.
Despite this, I keep on goin' in!
