Phoenix Sound Like Italian Summer

Can you hear the sound of the summer? If not, you will hear it now.

French synth-pop collective Phoenix decided to be a herald of the upcoming summer with their albums saturated with sunny and mirthful melodies. All of their five previous releases can be utilized for summer afternoons and summer night. I don’t know why I don’t find them suitable for mornings, lol. According to band members, sixth full length album Ti Amo investigates their Latin roots, and it cover simple, pure emotions such as love, desire, passion. After the first time you listen to it, it becomes clear that they are inspired by romanticized, imaginary vision of Italy where carelessness and Sun rule.

The successor of Bankrupt! Continues to seduces with catchy rhythms and abundance of variations and influences from pop music. The sound we hear in the title track summarizes the style that Mars and his crowd are offering on the brand new material – retro Italo disco with plethora of percussions. Hyper dance rhythms are supported by soft-rock guitars. Thomas Mars presents himself as a polyglot, singing in few different languages. Frequently, he refers to classic Italian stuff like gelato, SanRemo, prosecco, etc.

Piano dominates the opening track J-Boy, and is also prominent in the dynamic Fleur De Lyr that evokes the sound of the 80s. Goodbye Soleil is another attractive number that resembles Daft Punk and their trademark sound. This one brings Meditterian closer to you, and the similar can be said for Tuttifrutti that falls somewhere between Michael Jackson and Prince. Role Model is a downtempo that gets under your skin the more you listen to it. These type of tracks are my favorite – you don’t notice them immediately, but the more you listen to the record, they emerge. Telefono is definitely the most guitarish one.

There is no doubt that Ti Amo is going to mark the upcoming summer. These catchy numbers are going to rule the dancefloors all over the world. Thank you, Phoenix, for allowing us to bath in the sunny choruses and verses. Really looking forward to playing Ti Amo to my friends when we go to the beach.
