St. Vincent released the latest song "New York" while also announcing the Fear the Future Tour which starts this November. "New York" is incredibly different from St. Vincent's last single released from 2013's self-titled record. Many have noticed right away how vulnerable "New York" echoes. I'm not saying that St. Vincent hasn't been vulnerable with her writing before. However, this time around the singer-songwriter is presenting a whole new side. "New York" is unforgiving, sad, sweet, and emotional. In one way, St. Vincent sings out how this individual in "New York" has been lost to her.
The track comes in at 2:34 minutes. However, after listening to the song for the fifth time, the song sinks deeper. Each time a certain level of depth is uncovered with St. Vincent's lyrics. One may suspect that the songwriter is living in a heartless city. Or how the city reminds St. Vincent too much of this individual. Whether or not this song is about a lover, friend, or someone of importance to the singer's life is apparent. So, apparent that at times you wish to offer a condolence of some sort.
If this is St. Vincent's new direction, what else can we expect from the musician? Many questions are already floating through my head. Where does one begin?
St. Vincent is the type of musician who has created a catalog of songs or a few select years. Even today they cannot be compared to anyone. Most importantly St. Vincent offers a subtle look at the emotional state of humankind. "New York" is now on a repetitive beat where the song is playing around in circles. Now after many replays, "New York" comes off as a conversation between one person trying to figure out the ordeal that transpired between another. St. Vincent has crafted an introspective song in less than three minutes.
