"Sugar" follows "Saint Ivy" and "Down the Line" as the third track from Brooklyn indie lo-fi band Beach Fossils' critically acclaimed third album Somersault (2017). Breezier and slower in tempo than the latter two, it trades in subtle politicization to fully flesh out an internal state of mind that slowly pivots from apathy, disaffection and disconnection into a hint of emotional attachment ('I'm lost in the sugar/ Found out you're the only one'):
'So now you found the time to get awayBut you don't know what to do about yourselfI see it but I look the other wayAnd I'm feeling like I'm falling out againOn the outside, on the outsideOn the outside, change your mindI'm feeling nothing, I'm feeling nothingOn the outside, change your mind'
Lyris: Genius
The song's lo-fi indie rock production calls forth a tranquil and unhurried meditation, masking the urgency of Payseur's confessions, which delivers in his characteristicaly deadpan style (e.g. 'You see those angels in the alleyway/ Were they coming here to save me from myself?). The accompanying music video, which was directed by Justin Carlson, renders this languid internal journey with shots of the band members (vocalist Dustin Payseur, bassist Jack Doyle Smith and guitarist Tommy Davidson) drifting through New York and the Williamsburg Bridge on their (personally branded) skateboards, stopping briefly to shoot a few hoops in the summer sun.
