Uh Huh Ignites A Fire Under Julia Michaels

Julia Michaels has been behind the scenes writing music for big Popstars Selena Gomez and Fifth Harmony. Michaels who is barely 23 years old has developed a vocal range based on influences from Paramore, The Fray, Missy Higgins, Lisa Mitchell and Fiona Apple. This track 'Uh Huh' comes off of Michaels' Nervous System EP. The fact of the matter that Michaels only has an EP out seems posthumous. Although time as allowed this singer-songwriter to focus on her own primary solo material.

'Uh Huh' plays on a blend of Pop, R&B, and Sultry Soulful abstraction. Even subtle hints of Fiona Apple's Jazz intake can be picked out from 'Uh Huh'. The acoustic beginning offers an interesting glimpse into Michaels transition towards an Indie/Pop field. However, once the first 'Uh Huh' breaks the mold, a back bass drum beat is introduced throwing Michaels track into an immediate Top 40 rotation. Otherwise, the entire track with only the acoustic and vocals would be an Indie track. But that added heavy beat gives the song a powerful lift. Along with the clever keyboard ditty which kind of contradicts the direction of the track. Giving the production an excellent signature sound, a different style of musical alignment.

One might say Michaels is a breath of fresh air, however, I would say Michaels is a breath but a breath of smoke filled lungs with an intense vocal melody ready to set you inside's on fire. Michaels has confidence within her own song. You can hear this precise dedication in 'Uh Huh'. There is never a moment where Michaels doesn't sound reassured or self-wavering. Another cool aspect is the lyrical content, which follows the emotional side of liking someone. "It's my emotions going in for the kill" sings Michaels, this singular lyric perfectly captures how everyone feels when that spark or fire is ignited when you begin to fall for someone. Call it lust or love, sometimes both worlds mix together to create a masterpiece such as 'Uh Huh'.
