Hallucinatory Desperation

In 2016, Angus Stone - who is best known as one half of the folksy Sydney brother-sister duo Angus and Julia Stone - began recording music under the moniker Dope Lemon. The album Honey Bones was recorded in Stone's own farm studio near Byron Bay. While various musicians contributed to the record, the work of two particular collaborators were featured prominently on the record: Rohin Brown (of The Walking Who) and Elliot Hammond (of The Delta Riggs). The informal working arrangements and idyllic recording location have undoubtedly contributed to the album's "laidback coastal rock" aesthetic, which creates the kind of hallucinatory, chilled-out and mind-expanding experience one might turn to weed for.

"Won’t Let You Go", the album's penultimate track, has not earned an accompanying music video at the moment. The song's lyrical minimalism makes it easy to overlook, but it proves to be the kind of track that heavily rewards multiple listen. Backed by a steady electronic beat and effective layered arrangements, Stone spells out a simple but immersive perspective of someone who is not ready to allow the dissolution of a relationship. His casual vocals taper into echoes and wispy falsettos, hinting at a resigned and futile sense of desperation:

'You go drink your wineYou go drink your wine goYou go spend your timeYou go spend your time goWon’t let you goWon’t let you goOhhhhhhI can’t let you goOhhh'

Lyrics: Genius
