Druggy Quirkiness

LA indie rock trio Sir Sly (vocalist Landon Jacobs and instrumentalists Jason Suwito and Hayden Coplen) have recently released "High", their latest output since 2016's "Expectations". As with Brodka's "Up in the Hill", the track amounts to a quirky-yet-catchy examination of one's personal relationship to drug use:

'I’ve been smoking on the peace pipeI’ve been wondering just what would peace be likeI’ve been staring into headlightsSwallow me whole, finding my peace of mindI’m just trying to seize the momentTrying to love the little things, even if they’re hard to loveA monument to love unspokenCarved into stone “Unwilling to come undone”It feels good to be running from the devilAnother breath and I’m up another levelIt feels good to be up above the cloudsIt feels good for the first time in a long time now'

Lyrics: Genius

The blend of lo-fi electro influences with a classic indie rock sonic template helps the trio stand out slightly in the crowded indie rock scene, but it's the accompanying music video that comes with a greater memorability factor. Featuring multiple perspectives, psychedelic sets, quirky costumes, a devil mask, stretchy arms, mirrors, distorted faces, eccentric choreography and a brief banana snack, it visually represents the sonic euphoria that underscores the track while alluding to the weight of Jacobs' introspective lyricism:

"I’d rather write about my insecurities about changing belief systems, or feeling isolated in a world that I’m struggling to understand" (Landon Jacobs, Atwood Magazine).
