Indie Rock has made its bed and for the time being it is here to say. Now some people may feel that this statement can go and curl up somewhere and die, but let's look at the brighter side of things. Indie Rock does have a few high points, Courtneers is one of those high points. Even Morrissey has expressed a likeness to the band, given that Morrissey has a strict guideline of what is liked via musicians says a lot. So the Courtneers receive a pass on the Indie circuit front.
The track 'Summer' is on the fourth studio album 'Concrete Love' giving an emphasis on the fact that the band currently has another album out since 2016 titled 'Mapping the Rendezvous'. A band even getting around to their fifth record is a godsend.
Back to the song 'Summer' which encapsulates the exact feeling of the seasonal favorite. A playful tone is set from the beginning, allowing anyone listening to start swaying from side to side. 'Summer' is incredibly perfect to play when there is currently a raging rainstorm outside of your home (hints as to why I'm playing 'Summer' on repeat).
Lead singer and primary songwriter Liam Fray adjusts the status quo on what kind of song has a hook, catch and even a bit sensual. This beachside track could easily be played via headphones, radio, phone or cd blaring from someone's passing car. However, there is a definitive 1990's vibe which could attribute to Fray's love of Oasis and The Smiths. 'Summer' casts a pinch of subject appeal (talking about seeing someone for the first time), possible seasonal love, staying before leaving when the time is up and all that encompasses a summer fling, especially the great ones.
'Summer' treats the listener as an individual experiencing a story telling adventure. After listening you will want to go out or plan a vacation to your next stop at island paradise.
