After her guest appearance on Massive Attack's "The Spoils" in July last year, Mazzy Star vocalist Hope Sandoval (a noted veteran singer-songwriter by now) released her second album with My Bloody Valentine's Colm Ó Cíosóig under their project Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions. "Let Me Get There" was the lead single from Until the Hunter (2016), a long-awaited reintroduction to Sandoval's breathtaking vocals - this time paired with an inviting, atmospheric warmth.
The shimmering, wistful track is a duet with Kurt Vile: an interplay that evokes the fleeting preciousness of being 'in the groove' while hinting at a subtle melancholy:
'[Verse 1: Hope Sandoval + Kurt Vile]It was always our story, if you forgotEverything that we say, we have to honorAnd all the things we feel we have to removeIt's just the way we keep it all in the groove[Chorus: Both]It's all in the grooveIt's all in the groove[Verse 2: Hope Sandoval + Kurt Vile]Does it mean much if somebody's stealing you away?Who gives it to you when your love is not all the way?I wanna come to that persuasion, with you nowThat's the way we'll keep it, in the house[Chorus: Both + Hope Sandoval + (Kurt Vile)]It's all (it's all, it's all) in the grooveIt's all (it's all) in the grooveLet me get there (let it get there)Let me get there (let it get there)'
Lyrics: Genius
Sandoval and Vile take their own sweet time in 'getting there' - and we're all the better for it. "Let Me Get There", with its '70s radio ballad instrumentation, evokes an earlier, more unhurried time, when music listeners wanted a fuller, more sensuous immersion - and before the hook-filled Top 40-ready single began its quest for worldwide airwave domination.
