Talk To Me by Nightly came as a surprise, while scrolling through Youtube searching for bands I had not come across before, lo and behold, Nightly. A band that solely exists in the night of day (no pun intended) and casual communicates a private confession in each song. With Talk To Me, a highly synth produced song leads us down a dark alley full of electric energy. A comfortable drum pattern adding to the rhythmic section as the guitar strums an eclectic vibration. Running throughout the entire song is a need to move along. Sonically, Talk To Me provides a missing element. For a while, we had The xx with their seductive dark charm, however, with the release of Coexist the band opted for a lighter note. Nightly transition between celestial melodies, Pop/R&B vocals, and a trustful need to add a sultry tone.
The song trades in the either or of being dark or light-hearted for a straddled middle ground. Adding the right essence to both, an expression of happy beats with a darker lyrical notation. Talk To Me invites a conversation in need to be released. An odd need to talk as the band Nightly suggests in the song.
As far as synth loops go and even the drum machine added for a kind of pedal effect for the drums present graces untouched ground. Who knew a lyric such as 'the lights faded' could emulate such potent malice as well as sympathy. We all know that the tone of a person's voice can communicate a realm of emotions. Nightly checks in and delivers exactly the remedy executed for such emotions.
All in all Talk To Me throws a red scarf over the living room lamp to cast a mood, complicates an emotional situation with a friend, and issues a warning of complicate realities.
