Garage space pop duo Gulp materialized due to a chance encounter: Scottish vocalist Lindsey Leven met Super Furry Animals bassist Guto Pryce at a festival in Cardiff. This lead to the release of their debut album Season Sun in 2014, and a sophomore album that will be released sometime later this year.
If "Search For Your Love" is representative of their upcoming album, the breezy, summer atmosphere from their previous album is being replaced by something more dreamy and celestial. Leven's vocals are as airy and charming as ever, but this time she couches desire in celestial terms with lines like 'Journey through the dry heat/ Nothing to protect you/ Life seeks cheap/ Following the sun west (west)/ Beauty to be found in eagerness'. While the song begins with a cliche ('Go and follow your heart'), the song's hypnotic psychedelic vibe works almost immediately to keep you enthralled.
Leven's reverbating vocals combine with vintage synths and a pulsing bassline to evoke a restless, spacey quest for intimacy, hinting at the solace that awaits once this deep yearning has been quenched:
“I get really vivid dreams and often wake up with tunes or stories in my head and lyrically this is one of those - it’s a timeless love story really, but nods towards an eager search for love and empathy in an increasingly surreal and chaotic world.”
