Feeling (really) Good with Seramic

It’s been a while since something new has made me feel the way I do when I press play on the Black Eyed Peas’ Elephunk. I was not familiar with Seramic before I stumbled upon this track, but this initial taste has been enough to make me want more!

There are a few bands that I secretly think shouldn’t be covered. But over the past few years, I’ve developed a taste for a uniquely constructed cover song. The Gorillaz fell into the abovementioned category before I had the privilege of discovering this song. The arrangement is true to its title in the stupidest sense. From the first notes, I’m sucked into a groovy haze where my problems cease to exist and all is well with the world.

Heavy vocal editing, synth sounds and lush electronic bass and percussion characterize the song, staying true to the distinct cool kid feeling of the Gorillaz initial composition whilst bringing something new and fresh to the song. That’s no easy feat, especially when a song is as well known and loved as Feel Good Inc. But Seramic brings colour and creativity to the song that sets it apart as something that pays tribute to the old, but creates something unique in its own rite.

Female vocal harmonies take over the quickest rap lines, adding a sexy sense of soul to the song. There are moments where the music is almost dissonant, but combines to create an artful, mismatched collage of sound. Gritty electronic edits tie the verses together. This is clearly a thoughtful piece, but there’s an improvised feeling to it that makes it really fun to listen to.

Seramic is still on the small side, sporting a mere 3098 likes on their Facebook page and being a bit of a challenge to Google. After listening to Feel Good Inc. on repeat, I’m convinced that it won’t stay that way for very long. This is most definitely one to watch.
