All you could want from a lo-fi semi rockabiliy/pop EP is here and present with The Atomics. Their EP I Wanna Be Your Boy which takes after the Ramones classic. Having the gusto to not only name an EP but cover a respected song should shatter expectations. However, The Atomics are subtle in the slow climb to everlasting music sustaining livelihood. It's not that The Atomics are tricking the rest of us into thinking that they are the new "cool kids" on the block. Needless to say The Atomics find a repetitive accomplice and still to the pace. Without ever letting or lifting off the strumming of the bass, The Atmoics prove a noteworthy commander action. The band will stick through and continue to brace whatever criticisms may be thrown there way. Now that is true punk aesthetic perfection. And punk doesn't belong anywhere near perfection, that's the point.
This cover of 'I Wanna Be Your Boy' does sound a tad point polished. A little too clean, if the track had an added fuzz appeal the cover would take off even further. Some snarl, some kick throat attitude...basically if you are going to sing 'I Wanna Be Your Boy' you need to make the listener believe that you are worth it. First off the Ramones are a go fast or don't even show band. I'm not saying that every cover of a Ramones' song should be that way...yet a band or musician should bring a sense of power behind the cover.
I would like to point out that at the beginning of the track, the singer has a great grasp on the lyrics. One can hear a feature of disgust, power and a bit of a know it all attitude. That is by far an excellent component opening for 'I Wanna Be Your Boy'.
Now as an EP title to the other song tracks...The Atomics have already set themselves up for two routes. A memorable underground band or an easily missed pop rock revival. The Atomics are silently balancing on the edge of a sword with pop rock typical and exciting underground territory. Only time will tell how this band's future will uphold.
