Natasha Khan will always be in my top five list of musicians to look out for. As each new album after Fur and Gold pours out effortlessly, it only seems acceptable that Fur and Gold ended up being the beginning of this instant obsession. Mainly as the song from Fur and Gold 'What's A Girl To Do?' fell into my direct circle of perpetual and obsessive music listening. Khan drives a direct line from past girl groups such as 'The Shangri-Las'.
By pumping out a sadden chorus of lost kisses and tears as 'What's A Girl To Do?' has a steady drum beat repetition. From a hollow sound to a glistening cymbal hit. Ironically enough their even seems to be a sort of 'Love Lost' by Joy Division parallel as well. As if an over layering singular concept of misplaced love ends up loosing it's burst of excitement and passion was Khan's direction. However, this would not be impossible or unacceptable, Khan just has an endless edge as mystery surrounds the music Khan makes. No one is let in but we are able to witness the expressive outcome throughout each album. Fur and Gold demonstrated a hot seated beginning to a long reigning career.
The magical appeal Khan shares does not at any moment become quirky or tacky. Khan taps into the imagination, heartache of teenage-young adult love and the consequences that follow throughout relationships. Without missing a beat Khan plants a bit spot light on the troubled echoes of couples. Where has the passion, desire or fire gone? What is the next move, shall I leave or run away? How did we end up this way?
However long ago Fur and Gold came out, Bat For Lashes only builds up this ideal catalog of music emboldened with mysterious circumstances. Each song sounds as if placed within a different era and yet timeless.
