While Alice Jemima’s first single off her newest work, Liquorice, was not at all what I expected, I can say with conviction, that I was pleasantly surprised. While Jemima has previously blessed our ears with gentle, dreamy sounds, she has somehow entered the world of upbeat indie pop anthems without losing the authentic style that has always made her work unique.
The song shows off Jemima’s cool girl style with a breathy vocal and punchy, confident lyrical content. But while the song is relevant to the current music scene, it is also refreshing in its honesty and unique lyrical content. Also, what’s not to love about a song that mentions food so often?
In a culture where authenticity is a rare and highly valued commodity, artists who have a strong hand in every aspect of their product stand out from the crowd. Jemima defies indie pop stereotypes by using her production skills as well as her vocal ones in each of her tracks. The idea, creation and execution are all hers and this results in really genuine and forward-thinking work.
While Jemima’s previous offerings were haunting in their simplicity and airy beauty, Liquorice is unlike anything I’ve heard before. I am truly taken in by the creativity of her production style and vocal quality which has a depth that bodes well for her pending album.
