We constantly hear people moan and groan about today’s music being so awful. The same people often crave the nostalgia of classic rock and the heart of sixties and seventies music. The thing is, however, there are definitely new artists who have somehow found that authenticity and apply it to their own take on music. One of these artists is Mac DeMarco.
Mac DeMarco, born Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith IV, is a songwriter, musician, and singer originally from Canada. The twenty-six-year-old has already accomplished much with music, primarily with his solo endeavors including albums such as “Rock and Roll Night Club", “2”, “Salad Days”, and “Another One”. He has become extremely popular among the young hipster crowd and he has even caught the ears of a lot of older people who grew up on music that sounds extremely similar. DeMarco’s style is most described as “slacker rock” featuring purposefully mediocre production value for that authentic vibe, twangy guitars, and Lennon-esque vocals. DeMarco writes and records most of the music on his releases by himself and then acquires a backing band for live performances. What makes him so admirable is that he is really popular in todays overly polished music world with such a nostalgic, messy, and authentic sound.
It’s refreshing to see music like this surface and break through the cookie-cutter pop music that we hear way too much of. Mac DeMarco is definitely not the first newer artist to have an authentic sound and make an indent but it’s easy to say that he has definitely impacted the ears of young people with this sound in huge ways. DeMarco is only twenty-six years old and definitely has a huge future with music ahead of him and it’ll be interesting to see if he sticks to his guns with this authentic, twangy, slacker-rock sound or if he takes a different route. Nonetheless, he’s an artist worth giving a listen to.
