Bill Callahan is one of the early proponents of lo-fi rock and folk music. He started his career at the beginning of the nineties with series of self-produced albums before he joined the label Drag City, for which he records to this day.Callahan started out as a highly experimental artist, using substandard instruments and recording equipment. His early songs often nearly lacked melodic structure and were clumsily played on poorly tuned guitars, resulting in the dissonant sounds on his self-released cassettes and debut album “Sewn to the Sky.” But his talents include much more that dissonant chords and harmonies - he can sing beautiful melodies that get stuck in your head for weeks. The song “All Thoughts Are Prey to Some Beast” is just that - a sticky, sardonic tune, reminiscent of country movies but also of The Beatles with the subtle orchestral arrangements in the background. It is included on the album “Sometimes I Wish We Were” an Eagle from 2009, which received very positive reviews from music critics and made several publications' year-end best album lists, notably being named the second best album of 2009 by Mojo magazine. The song represents Callahan's style which is based on simple, repetitive structures, consisting of a simple chord progression repeated for the duration of the entire song. Enjoy!
