Lo-Fi Musings

"Nothing Lasts" isn't as pessimistic as its title makes it out to be. Noah Kittinger was only 18 when he released his debut LP Grow (2014), a melancholic electro-folk record that captures the transition from youth into adulthood. The juxtaposition between the inert introversion and stasis within the song's opening verses and the accelerating guitar lines and synth beats capture the process of maturing aptly. There are glimpses of musical brilliance, as well as a general rawness that prevents the song from coming across as being too self-assured and fully-formed.

As his stage name ('Bedroom') suggests, Kittinger specializes in lo-fi bedroom pop, an aesthetic well suited for introverted youths that need their own personal space and privacy to figure themselves out before full plunging into the external world. "Nothing Lasts" seems to hint at a longing to move beyond the comfort of familiarity - to venture into the dangers and thrills of self-altering experiences:

'I pray to godTo stop these thoughtsIt works for meCan't you see

I know that I'm betterI'm writing this letterTo my past selfSitting on the shelfNothing lastsIt's for the bestI won't stay hereI won't stay thereCause' now I'm happyFor you have changed meI am so thankfulNo longer painful'
