After releasing his debut album and making Rolling Stone's list of 20 Biggest Breakouts of 2015, Canadian singer-songwriter and piano master Tobias Jesso Jr. has kept a low profile so far this year. He recently shared "Don't", a record from some previously unheard material.
The simple, classic template (think Elton John, or Norah Jones) he uses for the song was a refreshing change from the other songs I've been listening to this week (even if it threads over familiar lyrical terrain), proving that you can achieve a great emotional impact without the use of a maximalist studio production. The lyrics basically amount to an effort to deal with the misery of heartbreak:
'I can wait longer, there’s nothing after this
I can work harder, if it's something we could fix
Don't say it isn't true
After all we've been through
Guess I'm getting over you'.
