The Suicide Squad OST: Heathens

Whoever said “the more the merrier” clearly has not listened to Twenty One Pilots yet. But, wait-- twenty one? That’s many! Kidding, the truth is there is this duo making a new meaning to the music world.

“Twenty One Pilots” is an American musical duo from Ohio. The band was formed in 2009 by Tyler Joseph along with former members Nick Thomas and Chris Salih but now only compose Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun. Throughout the years, they have self-released albums: “Twenty One Pilots” in 2009 and “Regional at Best” in 2011, before being signed by Fueled By Ramen in 2012. They released their signed debut, Vessel, with Fueled by Ramen in 2013. Their second signed album “Blurryface” was released on May 15, 2015 by the same label.

"Heathens" is their new single song for the motion picture soundtrack for the film “Suicide Squad” which premieres this 2016. The song debuted big on multiple Billboardcharts dated July 9, including No. 2 on Hot Rock Songs. The song was officially released on June 16, 2016 . This song is just perfect for the film because it has this dark but playful aura when played, just like the whole film. They sure know how to enlighten or to draw inspiration for this track.

The official music video, directed by Andrew Donoho was uploaded to the Fueled By Ramen YouTube channel on June 21, 2016. It is set in Belle Reve, a fictional prison in the DC Universe, with Tyler singing and Josh playing drums in the course of the video. Towards the end of the video, Joseph and Dun play on a small stage in the middle of the room; the prisoners then leave their cells and watch Joseph and Dun while they perform the remainder of the song. At the end of the video, Joseph is sitting in the room alone, and the prisons security guards surround him. Throughout the music video, various clips of the “Suicide Squad” movie are played.

Twenty One Pilots bring a mix of piano or electronic keyboard or a keytar, synthesizer, drums, vocals, and occasionally the ukulele. Their songs are usually poetry-based (written by Joseph and Dun). Joseph has stated that when poetry is too long, he needs to start rapping to fit the lyrics in.

People typically have trouble affiliating the band to a specific genre to describe them, since they bridge so many. However, many fans have labelled their genre as "Schizophrenic pop" (also known as Schizoid pop), a technically unofficial subgenre of pop. But nevertheless, what genre they may be playing, it still makes the listeners feel like they are hovering around the clouds, with Twenty One Pilots driving the plane.
