COFFEE

True, it’s a dance we know the moves

The bow, the dip, the woo

Though the words are true,

The state is old news I would like to talk about one of my favourite songs. It is incidentally also named after one of my very favourite things and I may even argue that the two have a similar effect. I first discovered it on a BIRP playlist in 2014, and it hasn’t left my playlist since.

Wrap me in your arms

I can’t feel it but,

Rock me in your arms,

I can’t feel it but

Amelia Meath’s warm, honeyish voice is enveloped in rich, electronic sounds created by Nick Sanborn. The duo creates a seamless fusion of interesting, fresh indie electronic textures and a clear, striking vocal melody. Meath’s vocal is beautifully raw and emotive. You may even feel that she is in the same room as you, because of the exceptional live quality of the recording.

Get up, get down

Get up, get down

Feel the turn of rotation and stop,

See the next one waiting

Get up, get down

Get up, get down

Sentiment’s the same but the pair of feet change

As the song moves towards the chorus, the electronic string sounds are joined by clean, minimal (but very noticeable) percussion. The feel good quality of Sylvan Esso’s Coffee is in full force during the chorus. Perhaps in addition to the beautiful musical quality of the song, the lyrical content contributes to this effect. Coffee speaks of the somewhat melancholy idea of repeating the same motions with different people – the familiarity of stepping into a rhythm with a new person, even though they may be completely unique. I think there is something comforting about anything that is universally experienced. That you are not the first, nor are you the last, to experience something is a soothing thought.

The repetition in the song, the beautifully warm electronic landscape and the unique and honest vocal work together to create a piece that communicates everything you want from a morning – slow beauty, comfort and coffee.
