Kyle Duke has just released the debut single and music video, “Pipe Dream,” from his album coming out May 4th, Snack Time. The video was directed by Alex Danger Raphael and produced by the Nils Boombox Team. The song was written and produced by Duke, and features backing vocals by Blaire Alise. A guitar based, ambient, chill track, he sings about the ups and downs of searching for success.
On the one hand, I guess the song is about the struggles and anxieties I was dealing with in my own personal life while at the same time worrying about if I'll ever find success, or if the whole idea of being an artist was nothing more than a “pipe dream.” At the same time, I feel like there's kind of a positive message in it too, the part where I sing “I don't care who's watching me.” There's different ways to measure success, I guess. And there's also the idea that things can only go uphill from here. So it's kind of up to the listener to make of it what they will.
His reverb drenched, whispery vocals are comforting and add to the relaxation his music invokes.
Duke is a part of Brooklyn’s indie rock scene, and plays with his band, Kyle Duke and the Brown Bag Boys, at venues like Bushwick Public house and Black Bear Bar. The band is reminiscent of 60’s garage rock, surf music and psychedelic rock, which is due in part to Duke’s love of the Beatles and the Greatful Dead.
“Pipe Dream” points to the old school. Duke recorded all the instruments himself with analog equipment, using low budget microphones to get a casual sound. Duke’s production skills, however, make the tracks sound clean and polished. Stay tuned for more of his warm, inviting sounds with the release of Snack Time.
