Being able to explain how wonderful it is to find a singer-songwriter from the same place you grew up in...is a supreme highlight. Now as I get over the fact that I did not come across Angel Olsen beforehand, will take a while. Nevertheless Angel Olsen's 'Lights Out' fits together a Mazzy Star/Patsy Cline tornado of how is this possible. The Mazzy Star reference for the slight fuzzed effect that tends to echo and leaves this dream-like quality to the song. Think "Blue Light" by Mazzy Star then throw in some Patsy Cline "I Fall To Pieces" and "Crazy" mix them about and Angel Olsen will pop out.
Angel Olsen attributes reasonable doubt and a Country slang way of singing. Proving that Angel Olsen is not just another Indie Rock individual developing into a copy cat musician (taking whatever trendy way of singing is now and running high over a hill by over doing it). Olsen, as you listen to "Lights Out" sounds as if her guitar, a few small effects, drums and the fact that recording in a tunnel can cause that great echo effect. Are the only things Olsen used to produce this track. Organic would be a word, however sincere seems to be a better description. An honest musician, writing real tunes and offering a way into the void that is Indie/Country/Lo-Fi music.
