To me, all of this makes me feel like I’m reporting music news from somewhere in the second half of the 90s, but P Diddy and Lil Kim have released the video for their brand new MMM track “Auction”.
In fact, the half funky song reminds me of those days too, which is good, because it means I like it. I don’t know why this type of rap appeals to me way more than the new stuff that’s out there. Maybe it’s sentiment.
The track also features Styles P and King Los, and was released as part of the MMM mixtape, dropped back at the end of 2015.
Even more of a throwback, is the mention of the name Hype Williams, who directed the video. For him, this must have been easy money to make, because there used to be a time, when his Hip Hop videos would always be massive productions. Yachts, Champaign, money stacks and high speed chases were set elements in his productions, as I recall. Ah, those were the days. He was the go-to guy if you were anything hot in the R&B and Hip Hop scene. How simple the “Auction” video now looks in comparison.
While Lil Kim just looks completely unrecognizable, P Diddy shows he can still put down a verse like he did back then. All that time at the office, as a big shot business man, didn’t break his strive as a rapper at all. Of course, he has continued rapping here and there over the years, and even tried some different genres.
What did catch my attention, was that the video was uploaded under his original stage name Puff Daddy. Did I miss something? Probably....
Reception of the tracks has been good on various press outlets, pretty much agreeing with my own findings (damn, I go with the masses after all….). What do you think?
