It's amazing how quickly the musical landscape can change. Only a few year s ago I was drowning in gloomy artists talking about death and other goth things without being goths, like Interpol, White Lies, and Editors. In 2016 there's only one artist that can hold a gothic candle to those glom mrock predicessors, and that's Porches.
With his sophmore album, Pool, Porches (real name, Aaron Maine) has crafted an album full of chilling beats and introspection. This is definetley an album for all those navel gazers who just want to dance in the corner by themseleves, i.e. me. It's a superbly intracate poece of music, as Maine uses thick synths to contraste the small deatils that bring everything together. Opener Under Water sets the mournful tone from the outset, but there is energy here, which continues on the eighties tinged Braid, and the excellent single Be Apart. The albums best song may be its most traditional. Car, unlike the rest of the album, relies more on guitars than keyboards, but it's a fast paced, effiecient track, that brings to mind Kraftwork, song by David Byrne after he stubbed his toe.
Pool, like all great albums that play in the dark, gives you a feeling of renewal after you finish it, and proves that you can still dance in the gloom.
