Grimes and HANA appear to be emulating Beyoncé's tendency to surprise-drop an immersive batch of music videos. On 6 October, the duo released a set of seven music videos, which were all shot while they were on tour in Europe over the summer. Grimes released videos for “World Princess Part II”, “Butterfly”, “Scream (featuring Aristophanes)”, and “Belly of the Beat”, while HANA released videos for "Chimera", "Underwater" and "Avalanche".
Grimes, HANA and Grimes' brother and frequent collaborater Mac Boucher shot the videos guerrilla-style over a two-week period with minimalist equipment: "There was no crew, makeup, cameras, lights. Just us and a phone, so maybe don't expect anything too fancy" (Grimes, Twitter). The videos can be watched separately, or a within a 38 minute director's cut named "The AC!D Reign Chronicles".
Against a backdrop of splendid European architecture, parks and piazzas, Grimes and HANA perform interpretive dances and poses in bright and distinctive costumes. HANA's music is moodier and darker, while Grimes' tracks have brighter, more optimistic overtones. These are fantasy sequences on a budget, but they still offer a sight to behold.
