Since Oh Wonder has started sharing videos with us, it has been clear that something special was underfoot. The pastel-saturated journey that accompanies Without You came just before the beautiful collaboration that is the video for Lose It. The UK based duo invited five dancers to audition for the video, and proceeded to record the pieces they brought and combine them into a unique and colourful visual delight. Now, this is the video for Lose It.
Not only were the dancers unaware of the cameras – some wildcards were also thrown their way during the audition. The video opens with each of the dancers doing an introductory sequence they had choreographed. We see the two members of Oh Wonder sitting behind a desk and observing as this takes place. We see five very different dancers each offering a unique and interesting interpretation of the music. The video cuts in and out of each of their sequences, and somehow a flow is created that is as easy on the eyes as Lose It is on the ears. A little way into the song, a large group of female ribbon dancers is introduced into the background. We see each dancer notice and react a little differently, and the sincerity of this is wonderful to watch. We see one or two of the dancers unsure of whether to continue in their performance, and we see the members of Oh Wonder laughing and encouraging them to carry on.
We see one dancer join in on the sequence, we see one engaging the ribbon dancers, picking them up and twirling and dipping one or two of them. It is a beautifully candid performance that makes for a visual treat to accompany Lose It. It is also great to see the band members respond and react to each of the dancers. It is quite unique to see so much of the band member’s personalities in a music video, and the genuine interactions in the video for Lose It are very refreshing. Aside from that, the video is such a visual treat that it enhances an already brilliant track.
I look forward to seeing Oh Wonder’s future visual offerings as well as their audio ones. For now, I’ll just be here, watching the video for Lose It, on repeat.
