Consisitng of Sam Battle lead singer and guitar, Russ Harley on keys and Ben Everest on bass they produce hugely infectious, melodic and hook-laden electronic pop. It is intelligent, emotive and fun, harkening back to the 1980’s when music fizzed with exuberance and technicolour riffs.
With a growing pedigree - they played Glastonbury in 2015 and are Radio 1 playlist regulars - their star is most definitely in the ascendance.
Newcomers to their brand of energetic, electrified indie will sense more contemporary parallels: Years & Years and Saint Raymond operate in comparably anthemic circles, while always remembering to temper the sky-scraping peaks with palpable emotion.
Their use of vintage and analogue instruments lends a warm and nostalgic sound to their music. Sam is very much into improvising his own instruments, “I put together this guitar that I’d saved for, with a lovely MIDI keyboard on the side of it. It had taken me ages to save for this guitar, but then I went and drilled holes in it.” He has even considered constructing a keyboard comprised entirely of Game Boys and is building his “own, 100% handmade, big-ass modular synth”.
This kind of creativity ensures their writing is full of invention and verve, standing them apart from their contemporaries.
Their latest release ‘Wasted Days’, a shimmering and sparkling groover with swept melodies and pumping bass, continues their swift evolution. A new single beckons in the spring with a debut album slated for release this summer.
Charge the depths and see where the melodies take you.
