If anyone had an unexpected comeback, recently, it is Craig David. It’s not all that long ago when I wondered what happened to him and wrote about him for my own website. Just a few months after I had written that nothing really looked set to happen with him, he got rediscovered. Twitter blew up, the moment he freestyled on the radio. And within a blink of an eye, Craig David reminded us of what we were missing.
It’s the easiest comeback I’ve seen happen in a long time, and mind you, I’m keeping a watchful eye on many comeback attempts. But there’s been no announcements, teasers, aggressive campaigning. It was just that one appearance that put him on the map, and if I may believe the radio DJ, it even was a spur of the moment appearance.
Craig David has been releasing one single after another since. Some in collaboration with others, like Katy B and Major Lazer, but also solo tracks. His latest solo release is “One More Time”, released on May 19th 2016. It showcases Craig David in great form. Everything he is known for is in there. It’s a blend of garage and some of the pop trends that are currently the thing to do.
In his recent material, he’s balancing the line of commercial, radio friendly songs and sure club bangers, with the latter usually winning the battle. His days of commercial radio success seem to be way behind him a bit and he’s very forgiven for returning to the one thing that started his music career in the first place: Clubs and his collaborations with DJs.
There’s no way that this guy is the old dude that is out of place in that scene. He’s as cool as he was in his “slick” days, if you know what I mean.
Later this year, his sixth studio album will be released and I can’t wait to find out what’s on it. All I’ve heard so far from him, promises something good.
