I couldn’t wait to hear this track, when I heard that it was going to be released this week. For a second serving, Calvin Harris has teamed up with Rihanna, now one of the most popular women on iTunes, along with Beyoncé.
In 2011, the two paired up for monster hit “We Found Love” and now they’ve continued on the happy vibe with “This Is What You Came For”. I can be pretty short in my review of this track, because I loved it right away. It’s upbeat, romantic and danceable. What else could you be coming for?
You could say, it’s a typical Rihanna track, but what the heck is that anyway? Rihanna has done so many things and the thing that usually makes it all work, is Rihanna.
So, is it a typical Calvin Harris track then? Well, even though he hasn’t been shifting between many genres, Calvin has been doing all sorts of things in dance music. I have noticed it’s a little bit more pop music than you would expect from him usually.
Maybe his relationship with Taylor Swift is influencing his music a little bit. The rough edges are fading slightly and the club sounds are traded for radio friendliness. He’s gotta keep up, you know.
“This Is What You Came For” was initially only dropped as a snippet by Calvin on his Vevo page, revealing an edited vocal by Rihanna. Edited in effects, that make the track even more catchy. It’s different from “We Found Love”, because it’s not intended as a powerhouse dance anthem, but that doesn’t mean it’s less powerful. It’s more subtle and more addictive.
Rihanna has been releasing a slew of songs recently. I think she has about 2 or 3 singles of her own out, currently, the Calvin Harris collaboration and her track with Drake was dropped last week as well.
Overall, it’s been an important week for many big artists this week, because after Beyoncé’s surprise of “Lemonade”, Drake surprised us with the release of “Views”. On that, there’s track called “Too Good”, which features Rihanna, continuing a little bit of that “Work Work Work” vibe and giving us even more to dance to. The song, “Too Good” may not officially been released as a single, but the press couldn’t wait to highlight this song, due to all the romance rumors between the two.
With all the music out there, Rihanna is definitely making sure you get what you came for.
