I Always Knew comes from The Vaccines sophomore album Come of Age. The consistency within the tracks composed by The Vaccines shows a dedicated timeline of an evolving group of people. Come of Age shows where What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? had progressed towards. No need for another introduction The Vaccines clearly have the future in mind and pressed forward with the continuation of I Always Knew.
The music video for I Always Knew shows Justin Hayward-Young sitting next to model Dree Hemingway in a carnival ride. The entire camera shot focus' on the young couple and the lights illuminated by the ride's colorful wonderland. I Always Knew actually feels a bit of a rabbit hole tumble towards falling for someone. Whether that was the director or bands intention, otherwise this is just a general acknowledgment.
Lyrically the track plays with the proposed idea of 'the one' in a simplistic tone of 'always you'. Whether the idea behind the creation of the song was about discovering that the person sitting next to you was always the one... kind of leaves this as an open-ended conundrum. However, from the music video at the end, the couple departs in separate directions. Was this a reflection of a past relationship? After the honeymoon phase or possibly from a break-up? Again another open-ended conclusion would be derived from the person listening to the song.
I Always Knew is playing with words and emotions. Oblivious to all the things we cannot see but only feel. As emotions are the most powerful essence on Earth, I Always Knew switches on the possibility of more. Wanting more, needing more and well more. Although The Vaccines have grown from their debut, Come of Age acts as the lost and wandering stage of life. Constantly struggling to get in line with what your life is supposed to be as opposed to who you will eventually become.
