The National's lead singer Matt Berninger recently told Rolling Stone that the band where back in the studio, crafting an album that will go to darker places than their previous releases. Which makes a lot of sense since the vocalist got all the whimsy out of his system with last years excellent El Vy collaboration with Brent Knopf. This turn for the darker comes as know surprise to the band's fans, and those that think they're a hair's breath away from dad-rock, as Berninger and co were staunch supporters of Hilary Clinton, and we all know what happened there.
Berninger also recently revealed, in an interview with Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), his method for writing the bands lyrics as “lean back, drink wine, smoke a little weed, and I get to just free associate for a long time with this music.” What a coincidence, that's exactly how most of the band's fans listen to them.
The new album, which will probably be called Fake Empire 2, will be out at some point in 2017, which makes 2017 better than 2016 already. Until then try out Matt's writing technique while listening to one of Trouble Will Find Me's best tracks.
