Warrior is a complex film about the nature of family, abuse, and violence. It was billed as a sports movie but the fact that it starred both Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton, two actors that usually pick nuanced and challenging roles, meant that Warrior was always going to be more than a dumb fighting movie. The film itself is excellent, but its best moment comes, not just from the brilliant performance of the leading men, and the fractured relationship on screen, it was the accompaniment of The National's "About Today” that gave the ending of the film its power.
This shouldn't be a surprise, when The National's music is featured in a film or TV show it is usually used for powerful moments, and "About Today" is one of the bands most popular songs, and a starkly beautiful one at that. So when it was used at the end of such a powerful, and masculine film in the scene in which the brothers fully reconnect proved that the combination of the right images and the right soundtrack can create an unforgettable moment.
