Sticking with the theme of festive vinyl, It’s time to talk about Oh Wonder. Oh Wonder, are a London based duo, who’s debut self titled record I was gifted this year - on delicious all white vinyl I might add.
Describing the sound of Oh Wonder has had me puzzled for a while. I think perhaps the best way to do so, is describing them as what would happen if Daughter had a baby with The XX. Josephine’s vocals are reminiscent of the powerful yet haunting tones of Daughter, and are perfectly complements by the backing vocals of Anthony. Combine this with the gentle electronic drum beats and synth and you can see where I draw The XX comparison from.
As an album, Oh Wonder hits all the right notes in all the right places. It’s become my go to record to relax to since I picked up a digital copy on release. Tracks like Technicolor Beat seem to sooth everything and take away all background noise. There’s enough to keep you cheery though, with tracks like Loose It and Drive packing enough punch to get your head bobbing.
Oh Wonder spend 12 months releasing a song a month, recorded in their own home, before the album release. This was enough to capture my interest and I didn’t make a mistake picking up Oh Wonder at the soonest opportunity. I’d implore you to do the same.
