Discovering new artists is a great feeling. Discovering a great new artist is something else entirely. Over christmas, that’s exactly what I did.
With each Christmas, comes a stocking full of gift cards for online music stores, and this year was no exception. While browsing, I came across something completely new in the related artists section of one of my favourite artists. What I found was Leif Erikson.
An artist based in London, but still in their infancy, I’d definitely label Leif Erikson as one to follow. The song that I found is entitled Looking for Signs. Looking for signs captures something unique, yet strangely familiar. The palm muted rhythm guitar evokes memories of The Stone Roses or some of the older Rolling Stones tracks. However, when combined with the soft tones and slight reverb on the echo, they achieve something atmospheric and unmistakably modern.
The song develops with strong melodies and playful guitar riffs, before moving through a slow and eerie chorus, finishing with a build up into the main refrain. Where this is only one song, it captures so many elements that it feels as though it’s an amalgamation of many.
Leif Erikson launched their debut Weekend EP in 2015. 2016 is set to be even brighter, and would recommend anyone with an interest in the alternative scene to keep an eye on the development of Leif Erikson.
