PETALKNIFE Perspective on Change
Self-expression. Writing is like therapy for me. I always feel better when I can process emotions and experiences through writing.
To put it plainly: trauma. I went through a lot of abuse growing up, emotionally, physically, psychologically, etc. Being able to sit with those experiences and wondering who I'd be without them is what inspired this song.
Writing on the spot can be hard. I've done it plenty, but I feel that the work that comes out of it is more generic when I write like that. I prefer songs with genuinely deep emotion.
My lyrics often come before my music, but I do like to write against beats because I never know what shape a song will take when I do.
Most random? I have two songs, one called Dreamscape and the other called Sea of Dreams. They're not released yet, but they're the most nonsensical of any of my songs because they're not about anything at all except escaping into another world. Dreamscape is mostly vocal harmonies. These are both in the same camp for being the most random songs I have ever written.
It really depends. I have produced the majority of the music I have made throughout my life in GarageBand. Still, lately I have been using Suno to reproduce those songs or make new ones using the beats I buy commercial licenses for from other producers. I like to write lyrics first and then find a suitable beat, but writing to a beat is fine, too.
For this song specifically, I went on FANTOM's (Carter Britz) site to buy some of his beats and came across the one used for this song. I listened to it and kept hearing "Everything has fucking changed" in my head on a loop. I made the purchase and secured the commercial license, then kept listening to the beat as I wrote out the lyrics. Then I took the lyrics and beat over to Suno, where the voice for PETALKNIFE lives, and uploaded everything to generate the full track. It took a few tries before I was able to get a version that sounded how I imagined it.
