“Boss Selection” is the new moniker of LA producer/recording artist Sunny Levine (Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, “Before Today;” Shabazz Palaces, “Quazarz vs. the jealous machines;” Happy Mondays, “Uncle Dysfunctional;” Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson, “Breakup”). With Boss Selection’s first release, titled simply “Volume 1,” Levine presents 12 unique collaborations with his all-time dream team of artists, including actress Rashida Jones, alt-hero Pete Yorn, South African icon Hugh Masekela, R’n’B legend Brenda Russell, and one of the greatest drummers of all time, James Gadson, singing for the first time since the 1970s. Not to mention offerings from emerging talents including Aska Matsumiya (ESP), Young Dad (Julian Casablancas and the Voidz), Orelia, Phlo Finister, and more. The result is a spacious, soulfully curated collection that trips the light fantastic, playing much like the mix-tape you always wished someone would make you.
