Julie Campbell, A.K.A LoneLady, is a solo artist, songwriter, singer and producer from Manchester, England. Her urgent, post-punk and electronic infused sound has garnered widespread critical acclaim.
Campbell first started making economical and inventive recordings while completing a Fine Art degree at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Signing to Warp she released her debut album, the starkly urgent ‘Nerve Up’ in 2010 to critical acclaim. Campbell plays all instruments except real drums, played by Andrew Cheetham. Co-Produced by Guy Fixsen, Nerve Up was recorded in a derelict mill in Manchester. The NME called it ”A unique, brilliant debut…we should celebrate LoneLady as the arrival of a fresh and invigorating voice whose talent transcends time, space and influence”.
Inspired by the urban landscapes of her home city of Manchester, her second album ”Hinterland” (Warp, 2015) brought funk and electronic influences to the fore, and garnered widespread critical acclaim.
Campbell wrote, recorded, mixed and produced Hinterland to near-completion in her bedroom studio in Manchester. She then travelled to Keyclub Recording Co, Michigan, for additional production with Bill Skibbe.
The Quietus called it ”A vibrant and urgent combination of genealogy and vision - truly a masterpiece.” All four singles released reached the ‘A’ Playlist on BBC6 Music and Campbell received a Sky Arts nomination for Best Breakthrough Artist.
