Today we’re talking about Ennio Morricone, yes, the famous composer who has been writing dynamic classical music that borders on the rockiest of rock n roll since 1946. The composers back with his greatest hits of 2017 featuring the iconic number “Here’s To You.” The track supports a rock 'n' roll groove with an Abba-sounding female voice part saying “Here’s to you…” there is an organ in the back that is sounding chords that are descending. It has a very 60s nature that is unlike any other in current music. The track that I am talking about is probably from the 1960s but is brought up until now with this current collection. Because of my parents, I grew up with this kind of music. I grew up with the organs and the electric guitars and soaring song melodies of yesteryear. I've never been much for the generation of music that I'm growing up in or that I grew up in. I've always been into the melodic and the very drastic orchestrations. I've been in fact written a song called “Beautiful Stranger” that has the organ strains that this piece does. I was trying to emulate the 60s style for the movie score much like Morricone does.
This piece was a tribute to a lost star of the 60s and later. The composer combines the expert textures of orchestra music with rock n roll, much like composers Leonard Bernstein and other contemporaries. Moriconi does his own version of a mass that is a rock and roll relic. In this case Morricone is taking a break from his western music that he was widely known for the 40s and 50s and taking a different tack with “Here's To You.”
Much of his music has been put into music for the last 60 years and has dotted the TV and video landscape and everyone knows it. I for one love his musical taste and I believe it's a shame that he hasn't gotten more recognized for his contributions to the musical landscape especially in the movie music subgenre. Fabulous nature of his orchestration gift— it's forever imprinted on the landscape of movie music. If you were to look at the whole greatest hits, I'm sure you would find something that would touch you in some way. I found a treasure trove. Listen and watch to many of the cowboy movies you know in the history of movies and you will be sure to find something from Morricone.
