You know how there's that one popular song that you keep on hearing on the radio, in a cab, at the department store or in a restaurant and you tell yourself that you must find out the title of the song and who sang it, but then you keep on forgetting to do so? Well, it was Sam Bruno's "Search Party" for me. I first heard the song in the film adaptation of John Green's best-selling novel, "Papertowns". I thought it was a very apt soundtrack for a movie about escaping and running away. It fit the movie's plot to a T. Due to some unforeseen chain of events, though; I completely forgot to "Google" and download the song.
I know. Have I been living under a rock? I'm always the last one to like these popular songs. It's one of my hidden skills, actually. I tend to find out about a song and fall in love with it, not at the height of its popularity, but just when everyone has already gotten over it and moved on with their lives. LOL.
I had some free time lately so I decided to properly "Google" Sam Bruno and the very catchy pop tune "Search Party". Samantha Bruno, a.k.a. Sam Bruno, is another hard woman to find. Like Elias, I couldn't dig up much about her. I did find her Twitter account, but there was no personal information in it - like date of birth, nationality, age, accomplishments, etc. I did see some pictures so I know that she is blond and she looks a bit Asian.
The first time I heard this song about "a place where only the person who knows you best can find you" (very suitable for the Papertowns storyline, IMO), I was immediately brought back to the year 2007. I don't know why, but there was something about the style and presentation of the song that strongly reminded me of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes", which, coincidentally, was also a movie soundtrack (Slumdog Millionaire). Now I know that some people might strongly disagree, but this is solely my opinion. It doesn't exactly sound "the same", but there was something about the "addictive synth-stutter clang", the beat, the rhythm and maybe a little of the two artists' voices that was very uncanny for me.
Although, I have to admit that there is something Lorde-ish about this song, it's still closer to "Paper Planes" for me. The leisurely beat, infectious rhythm and the extra-slow, semi-rapping; everything was reminiscent of that hit song from "Slumdog Millionaire".
To my surprise, Sam Bruno has been around for a few years. According to stereogum.com, "She already has a Kanye West stamp of approval. She appeared on Cruel Summer as one of the writers on "The One" a song featuring Kanye, Big Sean, 2 Chainz and Marsha Ambrosius."
I think what made me like this song in an instant was not the repetitive melody, or the nostalgia from "Paper Planes". It was the lyrics. I just loved it! As someone who loves traveling and wandering around, I could totally relate to it. It also has that sort of slow jam that makes you want to get on the dance floor and do your sexy, seductive moves while inebriated.
I'm still a bit high on "Search Party", but I'll definitely check out Sam Bruno's other songs one of these days.
