His career took a different direction when he went to Africa amid the Apartheid crisis to score for his first film. While researching for the film, his work was shopped around until he found a partner who was interested in his work. While there, he scored for the anti-Apartheid film , a very famous film to transcend the ages. Zimmer put up a demo tape of this soundtrack. The tape caught the attention of one Barry Levingston. His career notably launched forward with the scoring to Thelma & Louise. in 1990-1991. This was a smash hit featuring his slide guitar playing idol Pete Haycock. The pair would go onto collaborate on several future films together throughout the 90s and 2000s. He also scored the musical The Lion King which has gone onto be the highest grossing musical on Broadway. The score of The Crimson Tide won a grammy for the main theme which was quite memorable.
In the 2000s, Zimmer began to get more into big film scoring with the likes of The Last Samurai, The Pirates of the Carribbean series films and the Batman films to name a handful of the films that he worked on. After he worked on The Dark Night and subsequent other films, he recently announced his retirement from composing music for action films. He will continue to do other films as he is still contracted to do several projects in the near future.
