Solange is stuck between a rock and a hard place. As "the sister of", you're being watched closely. Especially when you, too, are in the same business. Even more so when your sister is the absolute top of that business. In such a case, you know people will draw comparison and you have some hefty expectations to meet, which they (the critics) probably won't allow you to meet. And you know it. But because you're "the sister of" you can't put out any crap whatsoever anyway. There's no messing about at all. Solange's new album is the first album that has pulled her away from all of this pressure and has gotten her acceptance as an artist in her own right. As soon as "A Seat at the Table" was released, the album became talk of the town. Throughout all of last weekend, I've been hearing nothing but good things about this album, so of course I had to check it out as well.Solange has chosen a sweeter sound compared to Beyonce. It gives it an airy breezy feel and a nod to neo soul / nu soul. Very easy listening and pleasing to the ear. In between songs, people speak of black culture and responding to the #blacklivesmatter movement. The topics of the songs range throughout different subjects. Solange has released two videos since the release of the album. Both have some artsy references and therefore remind you of the Knowles-family- and artistic resemblance. But, they also show Solange's individual influence on the flip side.Altogether, she has managed to give herself some leave way between that rock and hard place. She now has an additional expectation to meet with her next project. She has to top this. Take a seat and listen.
