For almost two decades, Erykah Badu is known as one of the most unique and influential artists in the popular music. She started her career with her first multi-platinum debut album "Baduizm" that was released in 1997 (this album changed the sound of the R&B music and influenced a lot of new generations). Her latest album was "New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)" in 2010 in which, Erykah shows more tendency to avantgarde music.
At the very beginning, Badu was recognized as "neo-soul" artist (often compared with Bily Holiday), but as the time went on, Erykah Badu with her work confirmed her uniqueness, and she created rich and complex opus. Even though she hasn't released any album for five years (and still counting), her significant contribution to the modern music remains unchanged. It is not the first time in her career, this kind of a long pause to happen so it is not a surprise. However after every more extended break, she is rising as the Fenix Rises. There are some data that says that she is working on a new album, but still nothing official and confirmed. Anyhow, I believe we should get ready for anything she will bring in the future.
I do love her whole discography, but my favorite album is her debut album "Baduizm." Every track is in the "smooth and jazzy" ambient, including a lot of great musicians and of course the "golden" voice of Erykah Badu.
The interesting thing about Erykah Badu is that she is a vegetarian for more than 20 years. On one occasion she said: "Vegan food is soul food in its truest form. Soul food means to feed the soul. And to me, your soul is your intent. If your intent is pure, you are pure."
Erykah Badu considers that the music is a therapy for our souls. She is not just a performer, but she is directly involved in writing lyrics and production of her songs. Erykah Badu isn't unique only when she is on the music scene, but in the modern industry too, known as a Stylish icon, who breaks the stereotypes and the barriers with her talent and energy.
