Grenadine & Kerosene is the debut album release from Denver based folk singer and songwriter Carolyn Schulman. This is a long-awaited album from Carolyn, who has worked closely with producer John McVey of Cinder Sound Studios in Longmont, Colorado on this personal and contemplative collection of original folk songs.

Listeners will be captivated by the both emotive and classic folk rock sounds and feel as if they are in the room with Carolyn. The opening track of the same name, “Grenadine & Kerosene” has a catchy and memorable chorus which tells us a story of mixed emotions about a relationship. “Double Stars” is equally emotive, with close vocal harmonies and kisses of mandolin lightly coming through to give a very solid folk sound. “Across the Borderline” tells us a story of a refugee setting off across the desert with her children to search for a better life. “Hallowed Life” is a fragile reflection on the passing of time, with a slow and steady melody on vocals matched with guitar solos.

An already accomplished musician, Shulman and producer McVey brought in a complete band of experienced musicians for the recording of “Grenadine & Kerosene”. Including, guitarist Michael O’Connor, Christian Teele on drums, Kramer Kelling and Chris Engleman on bass, Eric Moon on keyboard, Natalie Rae Padilla on fiddle, Glenn Taylor on pedal steel, and Greg Schochet on mandolin.

Grenadine & Kerosene is a wonderful album, with a beautiful mix of sweet vocals, harmonies and emotional rawness. Influenced by the women who had a hand in defining the folk genre, Carolyn’s sound reminds us of artists like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucy Kaplansky and Patty Griffin. There is a powerful presence not only in her voice, but also her energy which remains solid throughout all of the songs on this album, and with a very clear nod to her Southern roots.
