Kelly Wheeler is the mastermind behind LA band Chainflower. Fresh off their latest release "Brave" we got the opportunity to catch up with him and learn more about his past, present and future in the music industry! Read on to find out more.

Who is your biggest musical inspiration? Why?

There’s so many, but definitely Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix are huge influences. Also progressive artists Killing Joke, Sousxie and the Banshees, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, The Cure and David Bowie. And of course Tool, White Stripes, Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age, Alice in Chains and Nirvana.

I’ve always been inspired by heavy music done extremely well along with powerfully unique visionaries.

What is your favorite part of being a musician?

Creating music that can touch and influence others.

When it comes to inspiration, do you wait for it to strike or do you treat your creative process like standard 9-5 meaning you show up regardless if inspiration is present?

I usually show up no matter what because I can always create something whether it’s rehearsing, playing live, writing or producing.

What has been your most memorable experience (live performance, collaboration, etc) as a musician thus far? What made it the most memorable for you?

Playing with Perry from Jane’s Addiction and Danny from Tool have been very memorable collaborations. The music we created is great and they’re amazing artists to work with. Also working with Syd and Raanen now is just as memorable because we’re charting new territory in rock which is incredible to be a part of.

What is your earliest musical memory?

Hearing my Dad rehearse and play trombone. Also starting piano lessons at 7yrs old.

What do you want people to know about your latest release?

This is the first song that was written by me and Syd and distributed by Universal Music Group Distribution/Hood Associates so it’s a special new chapter for Chainflower. It also sums up a warrior attitude that is much needed right now.

What are your plans for the future?

We’ll continue creating, building and spreading the word about Chainflower to fans all over the world. Our next two singles are almost finished and ready for release, plus we have streaming events coming up. We’ll also be back out live soon when venues open.
