Ex's & Oh's is the hit single from Elle King's debut studio album, entitled Love Stuffwhich was released September 23, 2015. The song was also her debut solo single as well as the album's lead single via RCA Records, and achieved success in the rock genre, scoring the number 1 slot on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs chart. The tune later had success with a crossover to adult pop radio markets as well. Ex's & Oh'sbecame King's first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It also did well internationally with scoring top 10 peaks in Austria, Australia, and New Zealand. The song also received two Grammy nominations and Best Rock Performance/Best Rock Song at the 58 Grammy Awards.
The groove is a bit rockabilly, and bluesy, with the video offering up a bit of kitchy, tongue and cheek. It combines a campy sexual inuendo with a very fifties setting/style of photography. The video is groundbreaking as it also turns the tables on the objectification of women, common in contemporary music videos, and has received praise by critics for this role reversal.
The lyrics portray Elle objectiving over her many boyfriends:
One Two Three, they gonna run back to me
Cause I'm the best baby that they never gotta keep
One , two, three, they gonna run back to me
They always wanna come, but they never wanna leave
Ex's and the Oh, Oh Oh's they haunt me
Like Gho-o-ost they want me to make em all
all all,
They won't let go,
Ex's and oh's
