Paul Simon Rocks Madrid!

Paul Simon really makes things fiery on his last tour (or supposedly last tour). He makes his attempt at one of his finest hits “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” I do think that “Bridge” is supposed to be for Art Garfunkel, but I am pleasantly surprised that he gave a fabulous performance of this classic song. I am absolutely blown away. A singer who has been one of the brightest lights in the music industry for so many years, who is now entering age 75 is still going strong. Very fabulous! His backing band is so supportive and rocking with his style. He really lets it go.

After the gracious piano intro that is oddly a little reminiscent of the old intro of the song, but with a twist, Simon delivers each verse with a gospel style all his own. The drums and percussion are toward the front, in typical Paul Simon style.

There is a liking towards how Simon changes melodies in the final verse. He does scale-wise motion on “Sail on, Silvergirl.” He ends the verse with the usual over-the-top high bar that Garfunkel does, but leaves the verse with the word “water” as the band concludes the song. It’s really a great take of the signature song. That’s why it’s included in the article as a Youtube video for your enjoyment.

The other songs on the tour span from all the different albums at all different stages in his musical career. Great insights from all albums like “Graceland,” “Rhythm of the Saints,” “So Beautiful or So What,” and the newest album “Stranger to Stranger” dot much of the concert setlist. There are also the various hits of the 70s of his that he does like “Slip Sliding Away,” “American Tune” and the rare gem “Duncan” from his 1972 self-titled album. All is very inspiring and it’s a great way to leave Madrid—longing for more.

The band is as slick as ever backing Paul up with some of the tastiest grooves and rhythms that showcase just how much of a musician Paul Simon really is. For composers and songwriters everywhere, he is a sure role model who takes themes relevant to todays climate and adapts them for his own purposes to stay current. It was once said that when most other artists of his age and caliber are putting out Greatest Hits compilations and throwing in the towel, his mind is still at its creative peak, making songs that I am sure people will remember for years to come.
