Radian is an interesting Austrian band from Vienna who mix post-rock, jazz-rock, electronic music elements and even noise rock. Their latest album ''On Dark Silent Off'' came out very recently via Thrill Jockey, and packs some really interesting genre defying material from start to finish. The album offers an explosive concoction of ambient glitch mixed with some noise-rock and post-rock influences, while also having a distinct minimalist aspects and even noise influences throughout.
The first track on the album is titled ''Pickup Pickout'' and it starts off with some ambient drones that are soon accompanied by some rather catchy mathrockish drumming as well as elements of glitch barging in every now and then. The track then moves onto a heavier drone and noise-rock path which sounds pretty awesome to me, only to then move to an ambient part followed by some more post-rockish momentum. ''On Dark Silent Off'' is another great track that mixes all the aforementioned genres and thus could be summed up with quite similar words. The track intermixes electronic music and glitch elements with droneish noise-rock and some jazz-rock drumming, making for some fine droney noise-rock infused jazz-rock glitch. ''Scary Objects'' and ''Recreate Loved Objects'' move more in a glitchy post-rock dimension, and are both great tracks once again.''Blue Noise, Black Lake'' is another similar track that starts off in an ambient manner only to move into some rather noisy post-rock ending. The album comes to its conclusion with a rather lengthy nearly 14 minute long track ''Rusty Machines, Dusty Carpets'' - a track that probably is one of the best this fine album has to offer. It offers all from noise-rock heavyness to droney soundscapes as well as mixes mathroch elements with glitchy electronics, and thus manages to be interesting from start to finish.
All in all ''On Dark Silent Off'' is probably one of the more interesting albums that 2016 has offered so far. The genre mixing innovative approach is what makes this album so great, and thus the album is worth checking out for anyone who is into post-rock, noise-rock, ambient, glitchy electronics or even jazz rock. The stand-out tracks on the album are definitely the title track ''On Dark Silent Off'' and the first track of the album ''Pickup Pickout'', as well as the very last track of the album. While some tracks do stand out, then the album is quite solid from start to finish and lacks any filler material, which is a good thing of course.
